41st Annual Diocesan Convention

The 41st Annual Diocesan Convention was hosted by “St. Sophia” Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, IL, July 15-17, 2016. His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph and His Grace Bishop Daniil were joined by clergy and delegates from a majority of the parishes, monasteries and missions of the Diocese in a three day gathering to strengthen our spiritual life and to discuss important Diocesan business.

Friday evening began with a celebration of Vespers and a meal in the parish hall in preparation for a full evening of committee meetings: Diocesan Mixed Council, Diocesan Board of Trustees, Diocesan Sisterhood, and a special joint session of parish priests and parish board presidents.

The plenary session on Saturday was preceded by a Moleben prayer service and breakfast for delegates and guests. During this all day session, the Patriarchal Greeting of His Holiness Neofit was read in both Bulgarian and English. His Eminence delivered an inspiring State of the Diocesan Address, and the Diocesan Financial report for the past year was made and accepted. Short parish reports were made by all attending priests, and the various committees reports were made, including those for the Diocesan Sisterhood and the Popadias and Deaconissas Gathering. A ten year retrospective on the activities of the Bulgarian Orthodox Youth Apostolate (BOYA) was submitted together with preliminary results of the Diocesan Religious Education Survey which parish delegates completed the night before.

After a short break for lunch, the plenary session moved into new business. The Diocesan Budget for 2017 was approved and a series of resolutions were passed. Having successfully completed its business, the plenary session ended at 4.20 PM.

That evening following a celebration of Vespers, everyone gathered in the parish hall for a special dinner and dance in honor of the occasion. The Diocesan Sisterhood raised an additional $1,200 for the Diocese at this time with their usual charity drawing.

Sunday morning all gathered in the beautiful “St. Sophia” Church for the Hierarchical celebration of the Divine Liturgy complete with the ordination of Rev. Fr. Deacon Atanas Megerov to the Holy Priesthood, by His Grace Bishop Daniil. Rev. Fr. Priest Atanas Megerov is appointed as a Parish Priest of “St. George” Eastern Orthodox Church in Orlando, FL.
Dostoyn!

Glory be to God and thanks to all for a blessed and successful 41st Diocesan Convention!

Our dear Host in July next year is “The Holy Trinity” Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church of Madison, IL, on the occasion of its 110-anniversary of existence.
